Use VUCA For More Strategic Communication

Let VUCA Help You Become A Better Communicator

The term VUCA was first used in 1987 to describe the Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity of general conditions and situations, which aptly describe what we are experiencing today. How can we use VUCA for more strategic communication and speaking?

Volatility. Not many could have foreseen the current pandemic, and the future of live events still seems a bit murky. Adopting an attitude of openness to pivot and experiment with new mediums to deliver your message is the surest way to find stability during these times. Staying on top of new technologies can ensure you stay ahead of the game and ahead of your competitors. By the way, have you seen the just released Macro App? It’s built on top of Zoom and has the capability of increasing effective connections at your next meeting.

Better communication using VUCAUncertainty. A cousin to volatility, not knowing can cause a lot of anxiety. A contingency plan is the best way to mitigate uncertainty as it gives you options. For example, as live presentations have been canceled, the contingency is to go virtual. In addition to planning, investing in resources to add more value to your offerings can help sustain or even grow your practice during uncertain times. To ensure I deliver value to my clients that I can’t see in a live session, I have added the SpeakerPulse App to my coaching package. This app helps with vocal delivery. The added value comes at no cost for my clients.

Complexity. Are you working on too many projects? Is there anything that can be streamlined? This has been a good time to look at my processes and make decisions on how to simplify. I didn’t realize how much stress I was holding until I reduced and cut back on a few projects that I did not enjoy doing.

Ambiguity. As mentioned above, simplification reduces complexity and ambiguity. My improv instructor always says, “Specificity kills ambiguity.” Specificity leads to clarity – and clarity leads to taking action.

So, what are your greatest challenges when it comes to speaking these days? Can you use VUCA for more strategic communication? Where do you need support? Let me know! Let’s chat!
