Body Language – Non-Verbal Communication in the Work Place

Body language or non-verbal communication is very important in the work place. If used correctly it helps in getting the point across by allowing you to effectively connect with the person or persons with whom you are speaking. Body language is very relevant for people in management or leadership roles in the work place. Many people, especially those in leadership roles, do not understand the importance that body language plays when communicating. Learning how to use body language correctly when speaking can help you out in a multitude of ways.

Negative Body Language

Negative body language causes problems with miscommunication when attempting to effectively connect with people due to the conflict between the spoken word and what the body is saying. For example; an employee, partner or other person has come to you for assistance. You tell them that you are there for them but have your arms crossed with your body turned slightly away. Your mouth tells them it is ok, but your body says “Stop, because I don’t want to hear it.”

Be Aware of Your Body Language

One of the most important means of effectively connecting with others is to be aware of your body language. For any business to operate smoothly communication in the work place is an extremely important aspect. No one wants to lose out because what they are verbalizing and physically presenting conflicts with one another. People are less apt to take you seriously if your body language sends mixed signals.

Body language connects with others both consciously and unconsciously. This makes miscommunication much easier to occur. Communication becomes fragmented and very detrimental to effectively operating the business. Most employees take cues from leadership within the business. This is why all leadership employees must strive to have body language that supports the messages they are communicating to employees.

Not Just Leadership

All businesses can benefit by learning to communicate properly through body language as well as the spoken word. Effective connecting can be taught using many methods to get the points across to all employees. Once people learn better techniques in communication they will not only use it in the work place but throughout their interactions with others.

Most people aren’t aware of just how much body language plays a role in effectively connecting with others. Learning the importance of how others may perceive what you are communicating to them through body language is very important and saves on potential problems. Miscommunication can cost any business time, money and emotional upheavals in the work place. This means a loss of revenue which no company wants. Remember; teaching your employees and management the skills they need to be effective communicators does not have to be expensive, nor do the skills have to be poorly taught.
