I hope that my top five books of 2024 inspire you to adopt new learnings.
We are coming to the end of another year, and what an eventful year it has been! From crossing the country to deliver presentations and keynotes to landing a TEDx stage (to be delivered February 1st in Eustis, Florida – tickets are still available!), I am looking forward to an even brighter 2025.
For once, in what seems like many, many years, I have not been feeling the stress that the holidays typically bring. Perhaps it is because I have made a conscious effort to adopt new learnings throughout the year.
As in years past, below is my listing of my top five books of 2024 (in alphabetical order):
My Top 5 Books of 2024:
1. MicroSkills: Small Actions, Big Impact by Adaira Landry, MD and Resa E. Lewiss. MD
As a Certified Tiny Habits coach, the content in this book helped me create tiny habits with clients that were useful for improving their communication skills. Written by two physicians, the authors break down critical workplace challenges (many of which were communication-related) into simpler, yet learnable practices.
I recommend this book as a resource for individuals seeking to enhance their career with better work or relationship habits, or leaders aiming to improve workplace culture.
2. Say What They Can’t Unhear: The 9 Principles of Lasting Change by Tamsen Webster
Since many of us are involved with presentations where our objective is to influence our audience to change, this book provides a framework to achieve buy-in for the change we are seeking.
This book emphasizes an audience-centered approach and offers tools to move audiences from skepticism to belief and from passive agreement to active engagement.
3. Seek: How Curiosity Can Transform Your Life and Change the World by Scott Shigeoka
In a year fraught with divisiveness, I found this book interesting as the author explores the transformative power of curiosity as a tool to heal divisions, deepen connections, and foster growth. Shigeoka’s DIVE model serves as a guide to bridge our divisions and increase connectedness with others.
4. Stories Sell: Storyworthy Strategies to Grow Your Business and Brand by Matthew Dicks
If you have read Matthew Dick’s, Storyworthy, you will find similar content in his latest book. However, it was worth the read as it reminded me of the power of storytelling (if you know how to tell a good story). Matthew Dick’s writing is engaging, and his tips and strategies are imperative for making your stories memorable.
5. Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection by Charles Duhigg
Charles Duhigg dives deeply into the art of effective communication and combines insights from neuroscience, psychology, and sociology to guide those seeking to improve their communication skills. I thought his frameworks were useful, and his book was an interesting read.
