Artificial Intelligence affects communication in several ways and could be a game changer.
One of the biggest advancements in the area of communications was the recent launch of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) bot called ChatGPT. If you are not familiar with this tool, it lets you type in a question, and it will respond with an answer. Pretty cool, right?
I can think of several ways this is going to change the way we work. For some, getting help with writing the script for a presentation you will deliver in two days, it’s a blessing! What a time saver! For others, it could mean that your services will no longer be necessary.
Let’s look at how we can co-exist with this new technology, and perhaps use it to our advantage.
How does Artificial Intelligence affect communication?
1. Efficiency.
You are most likely familiar with the saying, “Time is money.” ChapGPT seems to be optimal when there is a need to communicate messages that are informational, factual, and quick.
One such area where it could be helpful is if you need to deliver a complex, technical explanation to an audience. I often get requests from clients to help them be more concise with their messaging. ChapGPT appears to be able to help here when they need to simplify a complex message.
Downside: ChatGPT doesn’t know everything and may generate inaccurate or misleading information. It may not be wise to completely rely on this AI, yet, as you may lose your credibility with your audience.
Or you may need to double-check the information ChatGPT gave you, which may not result in the time-saving that you anticipated.
2. Cognitive Load.
ChatGPT has shown it can create poems, write song lyrics, and even plan your meals or workout routine for the week. Again, the ability to take a cognitive load off our plate can improve our lives by saving time and energy to do things that are more interesting and creative to us individually.
Downside: Although starting out with a plan or blueprint that ChatGPT can provide can be helpful, many of us want and crave personalization that can only be delivered by another human.
The Future of Communication
In terms of communication, this new technology is here to stay, and it will only improve over time. As you can see, our options for utilizing it are only limited by our own imaginations.
Although it may be helpful in aiding us to craft communication, we still have the advantage – our ability to tell our story. Our stories are what connect us and make an impact. And making that connection is what effective communication is all about.

Most people don’t remember the data they hear in presentations. However, they do remember stories.
Why?
Stories make an emotional connection with an audience.
Stories make us, as speakers, more relatable.
And if a story is told well, the impact you can make with a story is longer-lasting than data.
