In today’s world technology is a tool that you cannot avoid. We use it in many ways and for many different types of communication. These new and not so new forms of communication still boil down to communication in the end. Just as with more traditional types of business communication, there are some great ways to use these tools and some not so great ways that can possible end up presenting yourself in not such a great light.
Power Point Presentations
This type of communication is really not that new. It is just the next step up from the old slide show type presentations. These presentations are computer generated and can have some pretty neat effect. Of course this is not really new information for the majority of you reading this blog.
The important thing to remember is the communication and information skills that you need to make your Power Point presentation successful. One of the points I wish to discuss has to do with the information presented. Give the important facts but do not mire everyone down in data that drones on and on this is one sure way of losing your audience quickly.
Another great tip is to know your material, do not be flipping through your slides trying to find your place. This is also important because if you are squinting and stumbling over your information you will lose your audience and maybe even lose credibility if it is an important presentation or if it happens often.
Also know the program that you are using as well as the equipment you will be using to make the presentation. This will also save you from embarrassment and help get your information to your target audience effectively.
As with any oral type communication, maintain eye contact and do not act like your presentation is the definitive presentation of this particular subject. Allow time for questions and actually have some answers in mind. This of course goes back to the second point of know your information
Video Conferencing
This communication form is not really new either but remembering great face to face communication techniques are important here as well. Speak with the person on the screen as you would a colleague that is setting in the same room as you.
Body language and speech patterns are important. Sometimes it is so easy to fall into the habits of slouching in our chair, fidgeting, staring off into space when we are at the computer or the person that you are talking to is not right in front of you.
Maintaining good posture and eye contact are important. Act as if they are right in front of you and present yourself accordingly. If you are video conferencing at your computer turn off all alarms and sounds that may pop up. The other individual on the call can hear what you are listening to via the built in microphone so this means silencing your cell phone as well.
Social Media
This is an area that a lot of business individuals have still had very little experience with. This is realm of short bursts of information and tiny snip of communications that when put together make a whole. It is so east to get lost in the short cut languages and the familiarity in which fellow users communicate with each other.
However, when you are using this medium for business purposes it is important to remember to remain professional. Use language and short cut script or text talk appropriately according to your target audience and the consumers/clients that you wish to reach.
Friendly, engaging communication is great and really is what social media is about but remember not to be too friendly or familiar when it comes to your business connections, sites, and pages with in the realm of social media.
An Ever Changing Realm
The best way to use these technologies the best of your benefit is learn t hem. Be informed on their uses and stay abreast of advances that are made, but no matter what, good communication techniques are a tool that you must have to navigate the world of technological communication.
