3 Strategies to Keep You Motivated in the New Year

Staying motivated in our “new” normal requires successful strategies.

Prior to the pandemic, our lives were fairly predictable – from how we ran our personal lives to how we worked. Our world became upended early on during the pandemic from not knowing the ramifications of the virus, to how long we were going to have to live and work in rather isolated conditions, to when things would go back to “normal”. New norms were created in response to what was deemed “safe”. For many, effectively connecting with others became challenging.

Our brains are not wired for uncertainty, and when we feel like we are in a constant state of threat, we tend not to function at our highest capacity. What then, are strategies that can keep us motivated and engaged as we start off this new year?

Based on years of taking classes and working in the improvisation space, here are a few ideas for setting goals in our “new” normal.

1. Rethink/Embrace uncertainty.

I can remember my improv instructor telling us to “get comfortable with the uncomfortable”. This is easier said than done. However, I’ve come to terms with the realization that not everything is going to work out the way I expected, and more often, they turn out better. Adaptability and flexibility are skills that can be developed.

2. Experiment.

Uncertainty involves experimentation as we figure out the best route forward. A belief that you will meet your goals is essential as you try new ideas, especially when new ideas don’t work on the first run. Adopting a sense of curiosity, and a growth or learning mindset is important to move forward.

3. Tap into your network.

This will help to reduce feeling isolated and build stronger partnerships. Sometimes we underestimate how much we can learn from others’ insights or perspectives, or how much we can contribute to others’ professional growth. A “yes, and…” approach can serve to ignite our own creativity and possibly foster new ideas for moving forward.

As we enter into this new year, remember to connect and align with your higher purpose, believe that things will turn out for the best, and strive for stronger relationships/partnerships. We will all come out much further ahead if we face uncertainty with curiosity rather than with cautiousness.
