Engaging in a conversation from different viewpoints can promote healthy communication.
As someone who has specialized and taught communication skills over the past decade, the One Small Step program piqued my interest. After hearing the StoryCorps founder’s interview, I signed up to participate in the One Small Step program.
At this time in our country’s history, many are feeling our country’s division. We won’t solve any problems if we aren’t willing to get involved and listen to one another. Working with clients regularly on navigating difficult conversations, I felt this could serve as a learning experience. I was not disappointed!
After I signed up on the website, in about 24 hours, I was matched with 4 individuals. Each of the individuals I was matched with seemed eager to have a conversation, and we scheduled our engagement.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve had a conversation with each of the individuals I was partnered with. Initially, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. However, my experience was a positive one.
My biggest takeaway from each conversation is that we have more in common than what seems to divide us, and we want what is best for the continued success of our country and for those who live here.
Engaging in a conversation with someone knowing they hold opposing views from ours can be intimidating. However, the benefits outweigh the downsides.
The benefits include:
1. Fostering Understanding
By engaging in a conversation with someone with a different viewpoint, we learn from each other’s perspective and develop empathy.
2. Improving Communication Skills
Engaging in this type of conversation encourages better listening skills, teaches the art of asking open-ended questions, and builds skills in handling sensitive topics.
3. Reducing Stereotypes and Bias
Finding common ground and common interests helps to break down preconceived ideas about others and promotes connecting on a human level.
4. Promoting Well-Being
Engaging in a meaningful conversation has been shown to improve emotional well-being, reduce loneliness, and create a sense of community.
One Small Step
For me, each conversation was enlightening and most of my conversation partners wanted to stay in touch. I’d like to encourage you to participate in this program. It’s just one small step to make this world a better place.
