Utilizing pauses in speech can create a deeper connection with your audience.
At a recent speaking event, I was conversing with an audience member before I took the stage, and the concept of “ma” came up. What is “ma”? No, it’s not another word for your mom. It’s a Japanese concept that translates to
“pause”, “gap”, or the “space in between”.
The concept is primarily used in art and design; however, I think it can also be applied to public speaking and communication.
As I’ve thought about the concept of “ma” and how it can be applied to public speaking, several areas are worth considering how the concept of “ma” can be utilized in public speaking.
5 ways to utilize “ma” in public speaking:
1. Enhances Impact
Just as “ma” values the spaces between objects, pauses in speech can emphasize important points. By pausing after a key statement, you can give your audience time to absorb and reflect on what has been said, thereby enhancing the impact. For complex messages, pausing can ensure your message is processed.
2. Drives Anticipation
Pausing before delivering a significant piece of information or a punchline builds anticipation. This technique keeps the audience engaged and makes the delivery more dynamic and compelling.
In storytelling, pauses can create dramatic tension and enhance the emotional impact of the narrative. This makes the story more engaging and memorable.
3. Creates Connection
Employing pauses during a presentation can allow for eye contact and other non-verbal cues, helping to establish a connection with the audience. These moments of silence also signal a higher level of confidence to an audience.
4. Transitions
Using “ma” can help in transitioning smoothly between different sections of a speech. Pauses indicate a shift in topic or idea, helping the audience follow the structure of the presentation more easily.
5. Mindfulness and Reflection
Taking the time and creating space to reflect on past presentations, what has gone well, and what you would change or do differently can significantly improve your performance going forward.
Too often we don’t create the space for reflection and miss the opportunity for thoughtful performance improvement.
Fostering Connection
By embracing “ma” in public speaking, we can create more impactful, engaging, and thoughtful presentations.
The strategic use of reflection, pauses, and spaces not only enhances the delivery of a presentation, it also fosters a deeper connection with the audience.
